Every April, Sri Lanka lights up with joy as people across the country come together to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year – known as Aluth Avurudda. It’s a time of tradition, culture, food, and family, deeply loved by all Sri Lankans.
At Yakaduru Yala Safari Lodge, we embraced this special occasion with our guests, offering them a meaningful, hands-on experience of this beautiful celebration – set in a charming environment surrounded by nature, tradition, and village life.
🌼 A Festive Morning with Sweet Delights
Our Awurudu day began with preparations for the traditional Avurudu sweet table – beautifully arranged with Sri Lankan delicacies like kokis, mung kavum, aluwa, and more. Once ready, the sweet table was shared with everyone, offering a delicious taste of Sri Lanka’s festive flavors.
🎊 A Day Full of Culture and Fun
Guests were invited to dress in traditional Sri Lankan clothing and take part in the fun. The lodge echoed with laughter and music as we all enjoyed various Avurudu games and traditions together. The raban drum added a festive rhythm, while our decorated swing under the trees became a favorite spot for both adults and children.

🌿 Tradition, Hospitality, and Togetherness
With mud-walled rooms, flower decorations, and the warmth of our local staff, the setting at Yakaduru created a truly authentic Awurudu celebration. It was a perfect blend of tradition and hospitality – where guests didn’t just watch, but became part of the experience.
See You Next New Year!
At Yakaduru Yala, we believe in celebrating culture through connection. Our Awurudu celebration was more than just an event – it was a joyful memory shared between cultures.
