How to Reach Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is one of the country’s most popular wildlife destinations. Whether you’re flying in from overseas or traveling within Sri Lanka, reaching Yala is straightforward with multiple transport options. Here’s a quick guide on how to get to this stunning national park.

By Air

The easiest way to reach Yala National Park from abroad is by flying into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s main international gateway. From the airport, it’s about a 5-6 hour drive to Yala, covering a distance of approximately 300 km. If you’re looking for a more convenient option, you can take a domestic flight to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI), which is closer to Yala, around 30 km away. From Mattala, a quick taxi ride will get you to the park in under 45 minutes.

By Train

For those who prefer scenic travel, taking the train to Tissamaharama or Vijitha stations near Yala is a wonderful option. You’ll need to first take a train from Colombo to Matara, a major city near Yala. From Matara, you can catch a local bus or hire a taxi to reach the park. The train ride offers beautiful coastal views, making it a memorable part of your journey.

By Car or Taxi

The most convenient way to reach Yala National Park is by private car or taxi. If you’re traveling from Colombo or any other city, you can rent a car or hire a taxi. The drive is relatively straightforward, and it will take about 5-6 hours depending on traffic and your departure point. For a hassle-free, comfortable journey, we recommend Kangaroo Cabs Sri Lanka. Known for their reliable service and well-maintained vehicles, Kangaroo Cabs offers private transportation with professional drivers who ensure you reach Yala safely and on time. If you prefer a more personalized experience, you can also book a Yala Safari Tour with transportation included, so you can start your adventure as soon as you leave your accommodation.

By Bus

Public buses are available from Colombo and Matara to Tissamaharama, which is the nearest town to the park. From Tissamaharama, you can take a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride to Yala National Park. Although this option is cheaper, it might take a bit longer, and the comfort level may not be as high as a private vehicle.
